Stroke(TIA), Carotid Health Check-Up
Stroke and Carotid Health Packages are designed to thoroughly assess your risk of stroke and vascular disease. Each package combines advanced imaging, medical consultation, and specialised blood tests to provide a clear picture of your vascular health and help prevent life-threatening complications.
Carotid Doppler Ultrasound
A focused ultrasound scan of the carotid arteries in your neck will assess blood flow and detect any narrowing, plaque build-up, or other abnormalities. This safe and non-invasive test plays a vital role in identifying risk of stroke and transient ischaemic attacks (mini-strokes).
GP Consultation
You’ll have a one-to-one consultation with our general practitioner to discuss your risk factors, lifestyle, symptoms, and medical history. Your GP will review the ultrasound and blood test results, then provide a tailored care plan to reduce your risk and support your long-term vascular health.
Blood Tests
Blood tests are essential in evaluating stroke and cardiovascular risk. By checking cholesterol levels, blood sugar (HbA1c), and other relevant markers, we can identify conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol, or clotting abnormalities that contribute to stroke risk. Early detection allows timely lifestyle advice, preventive treatments, or referrals where needed.

Understanding the Carotid Arteries and Their Role in Brain Health
The carotid arteries are two major blood vessels located on each side of the neck. Their main role is to deliver oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the brain. Because the brain relies on a constant blood supply, healthy carotid arteries are essential for maintaining normal brain function and reducing the risk of stroke.
When the carotid arteries become narrowed or blocked — usually due to a build-up of fatty deposits (plaques) — blood flow to the brain can be reduced or interrupted. This condition, known as carotid artery disease, is one of the leading causes of stroke.
Common Carotid and Stroke-Related Conditions
Carotid artery stenosis: Narrowing of the carotid arteries due to plaque build-up (atherosclerosis).
Transient ischaemic attack (TIA): Often called a “mini-stroke,” caused by a temporary reduction in blood flow to the brain.
Ischaemic stroke: Occurs when a clot or plaque blocks blood flow to part of the brain, leading to lasting damage.
Aneurysm: A weakened area of the artery wall that may bulge and carry a risk of rupture.
Symptoms and Warning Signs
Carotid artery disease often develops silently, without obvious symptoms until it is advanced. However, warning signs may include:
Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA) Symptoms:
Sudden weakness or numbness in the face, arm, or leg (often on one side of the body)
Sudden difficulty speaking or understanding speech
Temporary loss of vision in one eye
Sudden dizziness, loss of balance, or coordination
Even if symptoms disappear quickly, a TIA is a serious warning sign of future stroke and requires urgent medical attention.
Why Carotid Health Matters
Because carotid artery disease can progress quietly, many people are unaware they are at risk until a TIA or stroke occurs. Early detection through carotid ultrasound and cardiovascular risk assessment is key to prevention.
If identified early, risk factors such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking, or diabetes can be managed with lifestyle changes, medications, or — in severe cases — surgical intervention.
Taking proactive steps to check your carotid health helps protect your brain, prevent stroke, and maintain long-term well-being.

I got into the practice an hr early but was surprised that they could fit me in for my Ultra Sound. The staff were very friendly and I felt at ease due to being nervous about the whole situation.
