Providing Innovative Health and Diagnostics
The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of your neck, just below the Adam’s apple. Despite its size, it plays a major role in regulating your metabolism, energy levels, temperature, heart rate, and more—primarily through the release of hormones like thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3).
Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid): when the gland doesn’t produce enough hormones.
Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid): when it produces too much.
Hashimoto’s thyroiditis: an autoimmune condition that often leads to hypothyroidism.
Graves’ disease: another autoimmune disorder, but one that causes hyperthyroidism.
Thyroid nodules or goitre: enlargement or lumps in the gland, which may or may not affect hormone levels.
When thyroid hormone levels are off balance, a wide range of symptoms can occur.
Symptoms of Hypothyroidism:
Fatigue and low energy
Weight gain
Cold intolerance
Dry skin and thinning hair
Depression or low mood
Slowed heart rate
Irregular or heavy periods
Symptoms of Hyperthyroidism:
Nervousness, anxiety or irritability
Weight loss despite normal eating
Heat intolerance
Rapid heartbeat or palpitations
Insomnia
Tremors (shaky hands)
Lighter or missed periods
Thyroid problems can be subtle and easily mistaken for other conditions, so it’s important to speak to a healthcare provider if you notice persistent changes in energy, weight, mood, or menstrual patterns. The correct diagnosis of thyroid issues is the first step in remedial action.
